Martin Sterling’s professional writing career spans television drama, theatre, memoir and popular entertainment. From long-running serial drama to stage work and biographical writing, his work is rooted in character, structure, pace and the practical realities of holding an audience’s attention.

Coronation Street

From 2004 to 2021, Martin worked as a senior storyline writer and scriptwriter on Coronation Street, contributing to 4,114 episodes of Britain’s longest-running television drama.

His work involved developing storylines, shaping long-running character arcs, building emotional turning points and helping to structure the continuing lives of some of the most recognisable characters in British television. Continuing drama demands speed, discipline, instinct and precision. Every story has to serve character, audience and production reality at the same time.

That experience now informs Martin’s wider work as a novelist, dramatist and story consultant.

Stage work

Martin has also written for the stage, bringing the same attention to character, rhythm and audience engagement to live performance. Theatre asks different questions of a writer: what happens in the room, what holds tension without a cutaway, and how much can be revealed through voice, timing and silence.

His play Framed! opened in May 2005 before embarking of a 25-week national tour. It was later revived in 2011.

His stage work reflects a long-standing interest in wit, performance, public persona and the private lives behind famous names.
